As with most districts, there are two type of vehicles operating in the New Forest area, Hackney Carriages and Private Hire Vehicles
Hackney Carriages will have a roof sign with the word ''taxi'' and will display a yellow square sign on the rear of the vehicle with the car and license details. These vehicles can be hired from a local taxi rank, hailed on the street or pre-booked by telephone.
The Hackney Carriage can only charge up to the metered rate as set by the New Forest District Council. These rates should be clearly displayed inside the vehicle. You should expect to be charged at a slightly higher rate (also clearly displayed) for journeys between the hours of 2300 and 0700, and also on bank holidays.
Private Hire Vehicles are only recognised by a white square sign on the rear of the vehicle, which again displays the car and license details. These vehicles much be pre-booked by telephone, even if only five minutes before you travel.
Most Private Hire cars are also equiped with meters, set at the same rate as the Hackney Carriages, for accuracy on short, local journeys. However, you can request a quotation or negotiation a fare for longer journey at the time of booking.
